Philosophy: Question of the Week

1The word philosophy comes from the Greek language. It means “love of wisdom.” Philosophy is the study of some of the most basic questions about human life.

In St Audoen’s NS we aim to engage students from Room 1 to Room 10 in philosophical enquiry on a weekly basis. Philosophy for Children promotes thinking skills; it taps into children’s natural curiosity, and assists them in their search for meaning.

Every week we ask the children to ponder a question. There are no right or wrong answers! We respect all opinions! We encourage children to ask each other and discuss the question at home. Philosophy offers a way to open up children’s learning through the shared exploration of ideas in our caring and collaborative community.

We have had some great questions and answers this year so far; with wonderful responses from our students. Below are some of the questions we have asked:

Is change good?

Is something nothing?

Can animals think intelligently?

What do our dreams mean?
