Reading Recovery is an early intervention twenty week Programme for children aged between 5 years 9months and 6years 3 months. It was devised by Marie Clay of New Zealand.  (marie clay reading recovery).

Children are identified for reading recovery by teacher observation and by completion of reading recovery tests. These will be children who appear to be falling behind their peer group in reading and writing.

Reading Recovery children engage in daily thirty minute lessons comprised of ten minutes of

1) Familiar Reading,

2)Magnetic Letter Work and Writing,

3)Introduction of New Book.

Each child’s programme is individual to his/her needs and lessons are planned accordingly.

Throughout the programme children develop confidence, fluency, independence and enjoyment from reading and writing activities. They also develop excellent word attack and decoding skills which transfer into literacy in the class.

A daily lesson consists of;

1)Familiar Reading

Child reads 2/3 books are familiar with and have read before, aiming for fluency and confidence in reading.

Running Record taken, reading of new book from previous lesson and errors recorded.

2)Magnetic Letter Work

Letter sort —row of letters on magnetic board and child names letters quickly.Work with three to four letters only, eg Dd, Ff ,Oo ,Yy putting up Higher and Lower case of each letter.

Word Work—model word placed on board, child given letters to make ,break and rebuild word.

Writing—child composes short story(sentence),attempts to write with help from teacher.

Child has “practice/have a go page”,where counters and Elkonin boxes are used to help with slow articulation when writing words. High frequency words are brought to fluency on practice page or by using sand tray,doodle and chalk boards.

Throughout the programme children develop confidence, fluency, independence and enjoyment from reading and writing activities. They also develop excellent word attack and decoding skills which transfer into literacy in the class.
